ART DUBAI 2017

They wished us to live in an interesting era, and for what seems like most of the time, we unfortunately do. Simply put, mediocre talent is constantly being praised and rewarded, in almost all domains. Luckily, we have the remarkable days, when greatness from all around the world manages to come together and hope is temporarily restored. Yesterday, I attended the press conference announcing the eleventh edition of Art Dubai, an international art fair taking place in Madinat Jumeirah. I got to experience how talent, cultural diversity, and innovation are celebrated and come together to shape who we are, where we are and where we would like to go.

This year’s edition features 94 galleries from 43 countries including galleries from Latin America. There’s also a surrealist installation at ‘The Room’, a walk on the Sunny Side of Life by Piaget Jewelry, performances in the gallery halls, the Global Art Forum, The Art Dubai Modern Symposium, and much more. The program is so extensive that it only seems fair to directly link you HERE where you can get tickets and all the information you might need. It opens tomorrow to the public till March 18. It was truly refreshing to be surrounded by thought-provoking pieces, individuals, and ideas from different parts of the world. I was tempted to take so many pieces with me home! (if money were no object and greed no sin) but I did take a valuable message with me while I heard Shumon Basar, the fair’s commissioner say “ No one emerges as a winner in a trade war”, a gentle reminder that the trade of goods and ideas have shaped and keep on reshaping the world. Let’s hope the trade of interesting ideas becomes the norm again and mediocrity just a phase.
